When Wayward Teeth Take A Crooked Path

Las Vegas orthodontics

Malocclusion is dental-speak for crooked teeth. When you examine all the different ways that teeth can be positioned, it is not surprising that malocclusion presents itself in numerous forms. Malocclusion can lead to other issues, but orthodontics from Summer Dental in Las Vegas can help.

The number of ways that teeth can come in may surprise you:

When teeth slant forward, it is called upper protrusion, but you may have heard this impairment described, unkindly, as “buck teeth.”

An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth come down too far over the lower teeth when the mouth is closed. An underbite is the reverse —the upper front teeth close farther back than the lower front teeth. An open bite refers to a bite in which the upper don’t overlap the lower teeth. This can happen on the whole bite or just one side.

Tooth rotation is one of the most prevalent forms of malocclusion. Rotated teeth appear as if they are twisting out of place. Tooth rotation can create the illusion of uneven coloring because of the way light reflects off the face of teeth.

When the upper and lower palate are out of alignment to the point where the upper teeth close onto the wrong side of the lower teeth, it is called a cross bite.

In some rare cases – called transposition – teeth erupt in spots where other teeth should be. For example, a canine (pointed tooth) comes in where an incisor (front biting tooth) should be. Can you imagine trying to chew if your teeth have been playing musical chairs?

Many people with crooked teeth are too self-conscious to smile, but aesthetics are not the only issue at play. Crooked teeth increases the chance of cavities, tooth damage, and temporomandibular joint  disorder (TMD). Children with crooked teeth may have difficulty learning how to speak, and if they can’t chew meat and raw vegetables thoroughly, they may miss out on necessary nutrients due to a limited diet.

If you or your child has crooked teeth or a misaligned bite, we invite you to schedule an examination at Summer Dental in Las Vegas. Our orthodontics, whether it’s traditional metal braces of clear braces from Invisalign, can make all the difference. Call us today.

Metal Braces in Las Vegas

A perfect smile and straight teeth look great, but there is more to healthy teeth than just appearance. At Summer Dental in Las Vegas, we offer both clear and metal braces to help our patients achieve a perfect bite.

The simple truth is that almost no one is born with a perfect bite. If you’re among that tiny group that was, well – you’re lucky! For the rest of us, there are some very good reasons to consider improving the bite.

There are problems associated with misaligned teeth and an imperfect bite. There is usually some kind of pain or discomfort when teeth aren’t properly aligned. There can also be undue pressure on the teeth.

Teeth can be brought into alignment with steady pressure to the teeth and the surrounding bone structure. In time, that pressure changes their position, and brings the bite into proper alignment.

Obviously, this is an exacting science. One of the options at Summer Dental is traditional braces. Traditional metal braces are brackets and bands that are cemented to the teeth that are attached to one another with wire, which applies the pressure that, over time, brings the bite into proper alignment.

Clear braces, such as those available from Invisalign, are clear aligner trays that look a lot like an athlete’s mouth guard. They’re removable, but must be worn at least twenty-two hours a day to be the most effective. The aligners are created from impressions of the teeth, along with X-rays and other imaging.

Metal braces and Invisalign clear braces are both available from Summer Dental in Las Vegas. We can help you determine which are best for your bite. We also provide general and cosmetic dentistry, and pediatric dentistry, and offer extended and weekend hours for your convenience. Schedule an appointment with us today.
