Why You Need A Local Dentist

Our practice, Summer Dental in Las Vegas, offers family dentistry, general dentistry and many cosmetic dental services. If you have a family and are looking for a family dentist, give us a call.

A Dentist Close to Home is Best

If you live in the Las Vegas area, it is wise to choose a local dentist for your family dentist. It will be easier and more convenient for every member of your family to come in for regular examinations and cleanings. Most busy parents don’t need the extra inconvenience of a long commute to a dental appointment. And what if you experience a dental emergency? A local dentist who knows your family is best equipped to handle an unexpected dental need.

In addition to basic preventative dental health services such as fluoride treatments, routine x-rays and oral hygiene, we offer family dentistry, pediatric dentistry, and orthodontics.

Keep Kids’ Smiles Healthy

Parents with infants and toddlers often ask about thumb-sucking, the health of baby teeth, x-ray safety, and fluoride supplements. Parents with older children are often interested in sealants, tooth protection for sports, tooth straightening, and dental financing.

We look forward to answering all of your questions. Summer Dental in Las Vegas offers general and cosmetic dentistry.

Soft, Medium, Or Buzz Lightyear?

Affordable Dentistry in Las VegasAt Summer Dental in Las Vegas, our dentists are often asked how to choose the most basic tool of oral hygiene, the toothbrush. Picking a toothbrush can be as challenging as choosing a paint color, and there seems to be just as many choices.

If you have visited the dental section of the grocery store lately, you know what we’re talking about. There are brushes with bristles of varying lengths, brushes that massage your gums, and brushes that change color when they are used up. (If we had to rate them purely on their fun factor, we would choose the Spiderman brush.)

Some toothbrush manufacturers claim their brushes freshen your breath or remove stains from your teeth. How do you choose the best one?

One important factor is the firmness of the bristles. Hard bristles may be more effective for cleaning burnt steak off a grill or hard water deposits off a shower floor. However, this does not hold true for your teeth. Medium and firm brushes can harm your gums. Soft and extra-soft bristles are plenty stiff enough to clean plaque, food particles, and surface stains from your teeth. Soft bristles also offer more flexibility for hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

After having dental work or oral surgery, especially anything involving soft tissue grafts, make sure that you use an extra-soft brush and be careful!

When deciding on a toothbrush for a child, make sure the brush feels comfortable in his or her hand. If the size and angle feel awkward, the child will be less likely to use it long enough to clean all areas of the mouth. Children do not necessarily need a child-sized toothbrush. Some kids can manage an adult size brush better than a short, narrow child-size brush. If you are unsure, ask your dentist.

What about the electric types and water-shooters? Some individuals like the feeling of pulsing bristles or a mini-squirt gun shooting away at the plaque. People with arthritis or other movement-inhibiting conditions can benefit from powered brushes which take some strain off hands and arm muscles.

At Summer Dental in Las Vegas, we provide general and cosmetic dentistry, and pediatric dentistry. Make an appointment with us today.

Preventing Tooth Decay

Preventing Tooth Decay in NevadaIn Las Vegas and all over the country, tooth decay is one of the most pervasive dental issues. It isn’t limited to kids, either; it also affects adults. A home dental health routine and regular checkups at Summer Dental is your best bet in heading off cavities.

Blame it on Bacteria

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria. Bacteria live in your mouth and combine with plaque and acids to erode the enamel coating on your teeth. The breakdown of your tooth enamel can often result in the development of small holes in your teeth which are known as cavities.

Lifestyle Factors

Tooth decay is typically a result of diet and oral hygiene choices. When sticky foods are consumed and allowed to sit on the teeth, or foods full of sugars and starches are consumed  throughout the day, dental caries can arise. Foods to forgo include soda and sugary chewing gum; these foods tend to create an environment where bacteria thrive.

To help prohibit tooth decay, simply limit sugary and starchy foods between meals. Also, brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once a day, and visiting us at Summer Dental for regular check-ups and cleanings will help prevent tooth decay. We also provide general and cosmetic dentistry. Make an appointment today.

Keeping Kids Smiling At Summer Dental

Dentistry For ChildHealthy teeth are important at every age. At Summer Dental in Las Vegas, we provide pediatric dentistry, and advise parents to start bringing their kids in to see us as soon as their teeth begin coming in.

Children’s teeth face many of the same issues that adult teeth do, so prompt attention to any problems can spare your kids unnecessary discomfort. We strongly recommend that parents get their children started on good dental health habits as soon as possible.

Tooth decay is increasingly common in children. It is caused, of course, by the same things that cause cavities in adult teeth: bacteria and plaque that damage tooth enamel. It is important to limit sweets, and to have your children brushing and flossing their teeth every day.

Thumb sucking is extremely common in children, and it usually is not a problem. Most kids stop it by the time they reach four or five years old. If kids keep at it beyond this age, however, it can affect the development of their permanent teeth. If this sounds like your child, let us know at the next appointment.

Kids can develop gum disease, too, just like adults. It is often the result of poor oral hygiene. In its earliest stages, called gingivitis, it is easy to turn this around. We do a thorough gum inspection at each checkup and cleaning.

Good dental hygiene at home can get your child started on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. So make sure they brush and floss regularly, and bring them in to see us twice a year. In addition to pediatric dentistry, we provide general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment today.
